밀종密宗: 만트라의 의미

밀종 密宗이라는 명칭은 만트라 (또는 신주) 를 외워서 얻는 감응이 비밀스럽다라는 점에서 유래되었습니다. 아무도 이에 대해서 여러분에게 말할 수 없습니다. 여러분이 직접 수행해야만, 비로소 스스로 만트라의 효과를 알게 될 것입니다. 이는 마치 우리가 물을 마셔야 물이 따뜻한지 차가운지 아는 것과 같습니다. 만트라 자체가 비밀이라는 것이 아니습니다.

 

밀종은 만트라를 전문적으로 합니다. 만트라에는 다음 4가지 뜻이 있습니다.

 

1 모든 만트라는 천신과 귀왕의 이름들입니다. 여러분이 천신과 귀왕의 이름을 부를 때, 작은 천신들과 귀신들은 예의를 갖추고, 감히 문제를 일으키지 않습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 왜냐하면 이들이 “어떻게 네가 우리의 귀왕을 아는가? 어떻게 우리들의 천왕을 아는가?”하고 궁금해하기 때문입니다.

 

2 만트라는 마치 군인의 암호와 비슷합니다. 군대에는 매일 다른 암호가 있습니다. 내부인들만 그 암호를 알고, 외부사람들은 알지 못합니다. 예를 들어 암호가 “승리”입니다. 만약 여러분이 아는 군인을 만나면, 그에게 암호가 무엇인지 물어볼 것입니다. 만약 그 사람이 “승리”라고 말하면, “맞아”라고 할 것입니다. 여러분은 그가 같은 편임을 압니다. 그러나 만약 여러분이 그 사람에게 암호를 물었는데, “럭키”라고 대답한다면, 그는 우리와 같은 편이 아닙니다. 만트라는 이와 같은 방식으로 작동합니다. 천신들과 귀신들이 우리가 외우는 만트라를 들으면, “오! 이것이 우리 암호이다” 그래서 그들은 예의 바르게 행동할 것입니다. 그렇지 않다면 그들은 여러분과 싸우길 원할 것입니다.

 

3 만트라는 하나의 비밀 언어입니다. 그래서 특정한 사람들만 이해합니다. 비유를 들어봅시다. 어떤 사람이 매우 가난하고, 신분이 낮다고 합시다. 그는 아무도 모르는 해외로 갔습니다. 그는 다른 이들에게 “나는 다른 나라의 왕인데, 장군들이 반란을 일으켜서 정부를 전복시켰습니다. 그래서 나는 몰래 도망쳐서 이 나라로 왔습니다”. 이 나라의 왕은 그가 진짜인지 아닌지 정말로 알지 못합니다. 그는 가짜이지만 왕이 그가 진짜라고 생각합니다. 그래서 그에게 공주 중 한 명을 아내로 주었습니다. 그래서 그는 왕자가 되어서, 왕실의 한 구성원이 되었습니다. 그는 전에는 왕이 아니지만, 그렇게 행동합니다. 매일 그는 성질을 내었습니다. 

 

그때 이 사기꾼이 가난하고 천한 사람임을 아는 한 사람이 이 나라에 와서, 그 사기꾼과 결혼한 공주에게 이렇게 말한다 “그 사람이 화가 났을 때, 이렇게 몇 마디만 해보세요. ‘원래 너는 가난하고 천한 사람으로 저 먼 나라에서 왔습니다. 왜 이렇게 성질만 내는 것인가?’ 공주님이 그렇게 말하자마자 알 것입니다. ‘아니 내 미천한 출신을 어떻게 알지’ 그리고 더 이상 화를 내지 않을 것입니다.” 만트라는 이와 비슷한 효과가 있습니다. 여러분이 만트라를 외우기 시작하자 마자, 천신과 귀신들은 여러분이 그들의 출신, 그들이 어떤 존재들인지 안다고 생각할 것이고, 감히 여러분에게 문제를 일으키지 못할 것입니다.

 

4 만트라는 모든 부처님들의 마음의 각인입니다. “마음의 각인”은 두 명의 깨달은 존재들이 소통하는 마음과 서로를 알아보는 방법을 의미합니다. 모든 부처님들이 서로를 알아보는 그들만의 비밀 언어입니다. 그 외의 모든중생들은 이를 이해하지 못하므로, 만트라는 뜻을 풀이하지 않습니다.

 

불경에서 만트라를 하는 사람들은 계율을 매우 조심스럽게 지켜야한다는 것을 명확하게 설명합니다. 예를 들어, 능엄경에서 부처님은 만트라를 수행할 때 요구되는 이러한 지침 사항들을 주었습니다.

 

그렇게 하기 위해, 계율을 청정하게 지키는 최고의 사문 즉 비구를 스승으로 찾아야합니다. 만약 진정으로 청정한 승가의 구성원을 만나지 못한다면, 계율에 대한 그들의 몸가짐이 완벽할수 없음이 절대적으로 확신합니다. 계율을 완벽히 수행한 후에, 혼자 있는 곳에서 깨끗한 옷을 입고, 향을 피우고, 부처님의 마음이 설한 신주를 108번 외웁니다.

 

보살계경에서 이르기를 누구든 이 신주 (능엄신주)를 받아 지니는 사람은 고기와 오신채를 삼가해야 하고, 불음주, 불사음을 지키고, 맑지 않은 집에서 먹거나 마시는 것도 삼가해야 합니다.

만약 능엄신주를 외우고 지니는데, 행동거지가 바르지 못하거나, 계율을 지키지 않거나, 청정하지 못하면, 이 법을 성공하지 못할 것이며, 또한 스스로에게 해가 될 것입니다.

계율을 따르고 주력을 부지런히 수행한다면 이 법으로 크게 성취할 것입니다. 관음보살주경에서, 관음보살은 다음과 같이 말합니다.

 

만약 진실한 마음을 내고, 채식과 계율을 지키고, 과거의 죄를 모두 참회하여 교화하면, 만약 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 억겁 동안 지은 과거의 여러가지 악행을 모두 참회하고 고백할 수 있다면, 만약 다라니를 한 음도 빠뜨리지 않고 연속적으로 계속 외울 수 있다면, 바로 이생에서 당신은 아라한을 증득할 수 있습니다. 예리한 기질, 지혜로운 관, 방편법을 타고 날 것입니다. 여러분은 어려움 없이 10지(10지 보살 깨달음의 상태) 의 지위를 얻을 것입니다. 또 여러분은 작은 복으로 보상을 받을 것입니다. 얻고자 하는 모든 것을 얻을 것입니다.

The Secret School

 

 The Secret School derives its name from the fact that the response that one receives from the power of reciting mantras is secret. No one can tell you about it. You must cultivate it yourself and then you will know the mantra’s influence for yourself; just as when you drink water you yourself know whether it is warm or cold. It is not that the mantras themselves are secret.

 

The Secret School specializes in holding mantras. Mantras have the following four meanings:1

 

1. All mantras are the names of god and ghost kings. When you recite the names of the god and ghost kings, the small gods and ghosts are well-behaved, and do not dare to cause you trouble. Why? It is because they wonder, “How do you know our ghost king? How do you know our god king?”

 

2. Mantras are also like a soldier’s password. In the army there is a different password every day. Only your own people know it and the people outside do not. Let’s say the password is “victory”. If you meet a soldier whom you do not know, then you ask him what the password is. If he says “victory”,then you say “right”. You know that he is one of us. But if you ask him the password and he says “lucky”, you know that he is not one of us. Mantras work the same way. As soon as the gods and ghosts hear you recite the mantra, they say,“Oh, that is our password,” so they are all well-behaved. Otherwise they would want to fight with you.

 

3. Mantras are a kind of secret language, which only certain people understand. An analogy will make this clear. Suppose there is a person who is very poor and lowly. He goes abroad where people do not know him. He tells them, “I am the king of a certain country, but the generals revolted and there was a change of government. I secretly escaped and came to this country.”The king of this country really does not know whether he is genuine or not. He is a phony, but the king thinks that he is genuine, so he gives him one of the princesses for a wife. This makes him a prince, a member of the king's household. He was not a king before, but he acts like it. Day in and day out he is always losing his temper.

 

 

Then a person comes to this country who knows that this impostor was a poor and lowly person, and says to the princess who is married to him, “When he gets angry, you need only say these few sentences: ‘Originally you were a poor and lowly person who drifted in from another country far away. Why must you have such a big temper?’ As soon as you say this, he will know, ‘Oh, she knows my humble origins,’ and will not get angry anymore.” A mantra has the same effect.As soon as you recite the mantra, the gods and ghosts will assume that you understand their origins, that you know what they are all about, and so they will not dare to cause you trouble.

 

4. Mantras are the mind-imprint of all Buddhas. “Mind-imprint”alludes to the way in which the minds of two enlightened beings interact and acknowledge each other. They are the secret language of all Buddhas which can only be known by them. Because all other living beings do not understand them,mantras are left untranslated.

 

In the Sutras it clearly explains that people who keep mantras must very carefully uphold the moral regulations. For example, the Buddha, in the Shurangama Sutra, gave these instructions on what is required for mantra cultivation:

 

To do so, they must find as their teacher a foremost Shramana(Bhikshu) who is pure in the precepts. If they do not encounter a member of theSangha who is truly pure, then it is absolutely certain that their deportment in moral precepts cannot be perfected. After perfecting the precepts, they should put on fresh, clean clothes, light incense in a place where they are alone, and recite the spiritual mantra spoken by the Buddha of the mind2 one hundred and eight times.

 

And in the Sutra of theBodhisattva’s Wholesome Precepts it says:

 

 

One who receives and keeps this spiritual mantra (Shurangama Mantra) is prohibited from eating meat, or the five pungent plants (garlic,onions, leeks, chives and scallions); taking intoxicants; engaging in sexual misconduct; eating or drinking in impure abodes.3

 

And in the Sutra of theInquiries of Wonderful Arms Bodhisattva it says:

 

If in reciting and keeping the mantra (Shurangama Mantra) one violates propriety, or if one does not keep the moral precepts, or if one is not pure, not only will one be unsuccessful with this Dharma, one will bring harm upon oneself.4

 

 

A person who follows the moral regulations and diligently practices mantra recitation achieves a great deal within the Dharma. In the Great Compassion Heart Dharani Sutra, Bodhisattva Observer of the World’s Sounds5 says:

 

 

If you can apply your mind with pure sincerity, maintain vegetarianism and the moral precepts, and repent of and reform all your past offenses on behalf of living beings; if you can repent and confess your own various evil acts committed throughout countless eons past; and if you can recite the Dharani continuously, without skipping a single sound, then in this very life you may certify to the four fruits of a Shramana6. You will be endowed with a keen disposition, wise contemplation, and expedient methods. You will obtain the status of the Ten Grounds7 without difficulty. Even more will you be rewarded with small blessings. You will obtain everything you seek.
